Experiment with Time Blocking

Time blocking has been a wonderful tool in my business, but it took me years of refinement to get it right. This week, I'm sharing how this powerful productivity technique that can streamline how you manage your workday: time blocking.

Why it matters:

By allocating specific times for tasks, you minimize distractions and improve focus. Time blocking can help you gauge the proper amount of time tasks take, making you better at planning and scheduling your workload.

Quick Start Guide:

  1. Start Slow: Time block Mondays only. Once you get comfortable, add another day the following week, and so on.
  2. Consistent Blocks: Create time blocks that are in consistent time increments each week. Avoid setting blocks that are too short or too long—aim for blocks that allow you to focus deeply but also leave room for breaks.
  3. Schedule Breaks: Remember to include breaks as time blocks! They're crucial for maintaining energy and focus throughout the day.

Cami's Tips

  • Be Realistic: When starting out, set achievable goals within your time blocks to avoid frustration.  Avoid trying to be perfect each day!
  • Adjust as Needed: In the first few weeks, adjust the length and frequency of your time blocks based on what works best for your workflow.
  • Use Tools: Tools like Google Calendar or Trello can be beneficial in visually planning and following your time blocks.
  • See My Setup: Watch my time-blocking presentation at WordCamp Vancouver in the fall of 2023. And here are my slides.

Routine Checkpoint:

Remember, review what has worked and what hasn't. Are there days you feel more productive? Have certain time blocks proven to be consistently effective or ineffective?

After a few weeks of experimenting with time blocking, see if you feel more in control of your workday.
